M1858 New Army is a Wild West era revolver featured in CrossFire.

Overview

M1858 New Army is the second single-action revolver pistol in CrossFire, after the Ruger Bisley. It holds 6 rounds per-cylinder (30 in reserve) with strong power (able to two-shot kill at close range) and good accuracy. It also has a very fast draw speed, with no fancy twirls or hammer cocking.

Being single-action, the user fans the revolver (holding the trigger down, while the other hand pulls back the hammer). This technique is quicker than the Ruger Bisley's thumb cocking method, resulting in a slightly faster fire rate. The M1858 also reloads faster by replacing the entire cylinder instead of loading bullets one by one like the Bisley.

Quite fittingly, the M1858 is the standard weapon to be found in the Elimination/Wipe Out map: Western.

Trivia

  • The Remington 1858 New Army was originally a cap-and-ball revolver that fired lead balls instead of cone shaped bullets. After the introduction of modern metallic cartridges, many M1858's were converted for the new ammunition. CF features the cap-and-ball version.
  • In real life, each chamber in the cylinder needed to be manually loaded with loose gunpowder and lead balls, then primed with percussion caps. The process is ridiculously long however (as seen here). For the sake of convenience, CF uses a fast-reloading technique utilized by Wild West era cowboys: replacing the used cylinder with a pre-loaded one for a much quicker reload in combat.
  • The New Army in Crossfire lacks percussion caps: tiny metal caps that fit on the back of the cylinder. These are needed to ignite the gunpowder inside the cylinders and fire the bullets. Therefore, the New Army shouldn't be able to fire in CF, if it were realistic.
  • The 1858's fast draw may be a tribute to Western movies, with gunslingers quickdrawing their revolvers in duels.
